RICHMOND, Ky. – Freshman Matt Davis and sophomore Lucas Waters each drove in two runs to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to a second straight victory over the Akron Zips, 7-4, today at Turkey Hughes field.
The Colonels (4-3) took an early lead, as junior Tony Wells and senior Chris O'Dell led off the second with back-to-back home runs over the right field fence.
Eastern added a run in the third on a two-out double from junior Charlie Yarbrough and another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Waters.
The Zips (5-3) finally got to EKU starter Chris Friedrich in the fifth. He retired the first two hitters but Kurt Davidson reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by Davis. Doug McNulty then lined one to center to chase in Davidson with Akron's first run. Vince Chiera reached on an error to put runners on first and third but Friedrich retired Charlie Lenhard on a grounder to third to get out of the jam.
The Colonels put the game away with three runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Davis and a bases-loaded walk to Waters.
Akron picked up two runs, one unearned, in the eighth off Eastern reliever David Owens. He retired the leadoff hitter on a pop up to second, but the Zips followed with back-to-back singles to left. Scott Gunn then hit a chopper to second, the Colonels got the force at second but the relay throw to first was wide, allowing the third Zip run to score. Davidson lined an RBI single to right-center to cut the Eastern lead to three but Owens struck out McNulty looking to retire the side.
Senior Greg Harper picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth and Friedrich picked up the victory, allowing five hits and an unearned run in 5.0 innings.
