RICHMOND, Ky. – Freshman Christian Friedrich pitched 6.0 innings, striking out a career-best 11, to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Tennessee Tech and a sweep of a doubleheader today at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels pounded out a season-high 21 hits on their way to a season-best in runs in the 22-4 victory in game one. Eastern improves to 13-10 overall and 3-1 in the OVC while the Golden Eagles fall to 9-18 and 2-3.
Friedrich (5-0) ran his scoreless innings streak to 13 innings, allowing only two hits and recording eight of his last nine outs via the strike out.
The Eastern offense gave Friedrich all the support he would need in the first inning on a one-out RBI single from junior Charlie Yarbrough.
Senior Chris O'Dell singled to lead off the second the Eastern second, and eventually came around to score on a Joe Oliver RBI single.
The Colonels put the game away with three runs in third. Freshman Aaron Barrows and senior Brett Bolger began the inning with back-to-back home runs. After Yarbrough grounded out and junior Tony Wells flied out, O'Dell hammered a home run to right-center. It was his third straight game with a homer and his fourth in that stretch.
Game one was never in doubt as Eastern scored in every inning but the first and smashed four home runs.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in first off EKU starter Scott Goetz on a Kyle Rowekamp RBI single.
The Colonels loaded the bases with none out in the second and took a 2-1 lead on a two-run single from Oliver. Barrows then singled through the left side to drive in the third run of the inning and Brett Bolger drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Wells then helped the Colonels break the game wide open, hitting a solo home run in the third, and then hitting a two-run shot as part of a four-run Eastern fourth that gave them a 9-1 lead.
It was more than enough for Goetz who pitched 6.0 innings, allowing only three runs, to pick up his first victory of the season. In one stretch Goetz retired 13 Tennessee Tech batters in a row.
The Golden Eagles edged back into the game with two in the sixth and one in the seventh but Yarbrough made sure there would be no rally, hitting a grand slam as part of a five-run Eastern seventh, his ninth home run of the season.
The Colonels go for the series sweep tomorrow at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
