RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore Lucas Waters drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out double in the eighth inning to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to its fourth straight victory, 6-5, over Miami (Ohio) Wednesday at Turkey Hughes Field. Eastern improves to 17-12 overall with the win while the RedHawks fall to 14-16.
Miami starter Jeff Day retired junior Tyler Nix to begin the eighth and was then relieved by Steve Antoniotti who promptly got pinch hitter Joe Oliver to foul out to third. But freshman Matt Davis walked and Waters then drove a ball to the right-center field gap to give Eastern the 6-5 lead.
Junior Michael Mulholland retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out two, to pick up his third save of the season.
Miami jumped on top with an unearned run in the first, as Waters mishandled Jon Franzese's groundball allowing Ryne Robinson to score.
Eastern tied the score at 1 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from junior Tony Wells scoring senior Brett Bolger who had reached on a single.
Miami added a run in the second on a run-scoring single from Brandon Hillier but Eastern responded with four runs in the third. The Colonels loaded the bases with one out on a hit and two walks and then took a 3-2 lead on junior Charlie Yarbrough's two-run single to right field.
Wells then singled to center to drive in the third run of the inning. Senior Chris O'Dell singled to load the bases again and Nix was then hit by a pitch to give Eastern a 5-2 lead.
Miami used the long ball to tie the score in the fourth as Hillier smashed a two-run shot to right-center to bring the RedHawks within one and Robinson followed with a homer to right one out later.
Senior Greg Harper (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the win.
Eastern begins a three-game series with OVC foe Murray State with a doubleheader on Friday, April 14 at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
