Miami Edges Baseball, 7-6

OXFORD, Ohio - Jon Franzese hit a go-ahead solo home run to lead off the eighth inning and give Miami (OH) a 7-6 victory over the Eastern Kentucky baseball team Tuesday night at McKie Field.

Eastern had tied the game at 6 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from junior Tony Wells but Franzese smashed a 1-1 pitch over the leftfield fence to give the RedHawks a 7-6 lead.

Closer Matt Long then retired the side in order in the ninth to give Miami the victory.

EKU get off to a quick start, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from junior Charlie Yarbrough.

The Colonels then loaded the bases with none out in the second. Junior Shawn Flora walked to force in a run and senior Brett Bolger then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run with another run coming home on a Miami throwing error. Wells then tripled home the final run of the inning to give EKU a 5-0 lead.

The RedHawks cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning on a Chris Nadeau RBI single and a Franzese sacrifice fly.

The scored stayed at 5-2 until the sixth when Miami struck for four runs. Will Reynolds cut the Eastern lead to 5-4 with a two-run single and the Redhawks then took their first lead of the game on a two-out two-run double from leadoff hitter Ryne Robinson.

EKU returns to OVC action on Saturday April 22, traveling to face Jacksonville State in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
