RICHMOND, Ky. - Josh Ehmke allowed only three runs in 8.0 innings and struck out nine to lead the Samford Bulldogs to a 10-3 victory over the Eastern Kentucky baseball team Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field. Samford improved to 24-18 overall and 13-3 in the OVC with the victory while Eastern fell to 19-19 and 8-7. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed and the teams will now play two seven-inning games on Sunday beginning at noon.
Eastern jumped on top 1-0 in the first on a RBI groundout from senior Brett Bolger but Samford tied it in the top of the second on a one-out Bear Burnett home run to right.
The game stayed tied until the sixth when the Bulldogs exploded for four runs. Louis Rojas walked to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a Parker Gargis single up the middle. EKU starter Scott Goetz then uncorked a wild pitch with Burnett at the plate, catcher Joe Oliver tried to throw out Rojas at third but the throw went down the left field line allowing Rojas to score and Gargis to move to third. Gargis then came home a pitch later on another wild pitch.
Burnett would eventually walk and come around to score on a wild pitch from EKU reliever David Owens and Trey Moody drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single to give Samford a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 8-1 in the seventh on a three-run double from center fielder Matt Alling.
EKU cut the lead to 8-2 on an Oliver home run in the bottom of the inning, his fifth of the season.
The Bulldogs added two more in the eighth and Eastern scored in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from freshman Matt Davis to close out the scoring.
Ehmke (8-2) scattered seven hits over those 8.0 innings to pick up the victory while Goetz (2-5) allowed five runs in 5.0 plus innings and took the loss.
