RICHMOND, Ky. - Junior Charlie Yarbrough hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning to give the Eastern Kentucky baseball team a 2-1 victory over Samford in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Turkey Hughes Field. Eastern completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-6 win in game two. Eastern improved to 21-19 overall and 10-7 in the OVC while the Bulldogs fell to 24-20 and 13-5.
Senior Brett Bolger reached on a infield single with two outs and nobody on to bring up Yarbrough who smashed a line-drive into the gap in right-center field allowing Bolger to come around from first with the winning run.
Freshman Christian Friedrich (7-1) pitched a five-hitter, striking out six, to pick up the victory.
Eastern jumped on top with a run in the first on a Yarbrough RBI single, driving in junior Shawn Flora who led off the inning with a single down the left field line.
The scored stayed that way until Trey Moody doubled in Matt Alling with two outs in the fifth.
Eric Lassiter (4-4) was the hard-luck loser for Samford, allowing just two runs and eight hits in 6.2 innings.
The Colonels once again jumped on top in the first of game two with Flora leading off with a double down the left field line and coming around to score on a RBI single through the right side from junior Tony Wells.
The Bulldogs tied it in the second though as Parker Gargis singled through the left side to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a two-out Alling double.
Samford grabbed its first lead of the day with an unearned run in the fourth. Bear Burnett singled to begin the inning and then moved to third when Flora mishandled a Garret Rice single to center. He came home to score when Alling grounded into a double play.
They did not hold on to the lead for long though as Eastern responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Chris O'Dell led off the inning with his 10th home run of the season and sophomore catcher Joe Oliver then followed with his sixth home run of the season to give the Colonels a 3-2 lead.
Flora then added the third run of the inning, doubling in freshman Matt Davis who had reached on an error.
Samford got a run back in the fifth but Eastern pushed its lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the inning on a Davis two-run double and a RBI single from sophomore Lucas Waters.
The Bulldogs nearly tied it in the seventh as they loaded the bases with none out. Burnett then singled in two off EKU closer Greg Harper to bring Samford within two but Gargis was thrown out at third on the play for the first out of the inning. Rice then flew out to left for the second out but Alling doubled to left-center to cut the Eastern lead to 7-6. Alling then moved to third on a wild pitch with Luke Peavy up. Peavy would eventually walk but Harper got Moody to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Eastern returns to action on Wednesday, May 3rd, hosting Marshall at 3 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field.
