RICHMOND, Ky. - Freshman Christian Friedrich hurled a two-hitter, striking out 10, to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Illinois in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field. EIU defeated the Colonels 11-4 in game one. The Colonels are now 24-22 overall and 13-9 in the conference and the Panthers are 28-20 and 14-9.
Friedrich (9-1) allowed one run and did not give up a hit until Brett Nommensen singled with one-out in the sixth. The 6-3 southpaw did not walk a batter and struck out at least 10 for the second straight game and the sixth time this season.
EKU took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior Brett Bolger singled with one out, moved to third on a single from junior Charlie Yarbrough and then came home on a sacrifice fly from senior Chris O'Dell.
The Colonels built the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on a Bolger home run to right.
EIU cut the lead to 2-1 in the seventh on a lead off home run from Erik Huber but Friedrich then retired the final three hitters for his ninth victory of the season.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring an unearned run in the first but the Colonels tied it in the second on O'Dell's 11th home run of the season.
EIU took the lead for good with two runs in the third on a Mark Chagnon RBI triple and a Huber RBI groundout. Chagnon, the leading hitter in the OVC, went 5-for-6 with three RBI in the game.
EKU cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning on a Tony Wells RBI single but the Panthers tacked on two more in the fourth on a Blake Meyer sacrifice fly and a Nommensen RBI single.
EIU put the game away with four runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Chagnon, Huber and Ryan Campbell and a bases-loaded walk to Peter Stone.
Mike Budde, who relieved Panther starter Brandon Murphy with two outs in the third, allowed no runs and two hits in 4.2 innings to pick up the victory.
