RICHMOND, Ky. - Senior Scott Goetz allowed just one earned run in 7.0 innings to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to 12-6 victory over Austin Peay in game one of an OVC doubleheader Friday at Turkey Hughes Field. The Governors came back to defeat Eastern 5-0 in game two, despite a career-high 14 strike outs from freshman southpaw Christian Friedrich. The Colonels are now 26-24 overall and 15-10 in the conference while Austin Peay is 31-24 and 14-12.
Goetz (3-7) retired the side in the first and Eastern then gave him a lead to work with, tallying four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Junior Shawn Flora grounded out to third to begin the inning but senior Brett Bolger then singled and moved to second on a single from junior Charlie Yarbrough. Junior Tony Wells followed with an RBI single to score Bolger but APSU starter Shawn Kelley then retired senior Chris O'Dell on a groundout to first. Sophomore Joe Oliver then looped a two-run single to right-center and freshman Matt Davis gave Eastern its final run of the inning with an RBI double.
The score stood at 6-2 going to the bottom of the fifth when EKU put the game away with a five-run explosion.
O'Dell doubled to lead off the inning and then moved to third on an Oliver single. Davis then chased O'Dell home with a single to center and junior Kirt Kleindienst knocked in two more a batter later with a single up the middle. Flora drove in sophomore Lucas Waters with a sacrifice fly to right and Wells drove in the final run of the inning with a single through the right side to give Eastern an 11-2 lead.
The Colonels finished the game with 16 hits as eight of the nine Eastern starters tallied at least a hit. The seven innings Goetz pitched was his longest outing of the season.
APSU got two unearned runs in the first inning of game two against Friedrich. Matt Ledbetter singled with one-out and Friedrich then threw Ryan Kane's bunt into centerfield to put runners on second and third. Ryan Gilroy then smacked a two-run double to give the Governors a 2-0 lead.
The score stayed that way until the fifth when APSU loaded the bases with none out on a Colonel error, a walk and an infield single. Friedrich struck out the next two hitters but then walked Jacob Schroeder to force in a run.
Friedrich (9-2) allowed just four hits in six innings and struck out the side in the first, fourth and six innings.
Brad Daniel (6-2) pitched a three-hitter, walking three and striking out five, to pick up the victory.
The teams will wrap the series and the regular season Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the Colonels will honor their eight seniors before the game.
