Baseball Routs Berea College 16-0

Colonels snap three-game losin

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky baseball team scored a run in every inning and pounded out a season-high 20 hits on its way to a 16-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels improve to 6-4 on the season with the victory.

Eastern got all the runs it would need in the first, putting six runs on the board. Senior Shawn Flora led off with a single, stole second and then came around to score on an RBI single from sophomore Lucas Waters. Senior Tony Wells followed with another single, bringing up junior Joe Oliver who drilled a two-run triple into left-center field making the score 3-0.

Oliver came home a batter later on a RBI single from sophomore Matt Davis who eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Clint Seymour. Sophomore Dylan McMaine, who reached on an error, scored the final run of the inning on a run-scoring single by junior Tyler Barnett.

EKU added on single runs in the next four innings highlighted by RBI hits from Flora, McMaine, Waters. The Colonels added on three more in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The two in the seventh came on an RBI groundout from senior Tony Newman and a run-scoring single from freshman Breck Norment, his first career RBI.

Senior Michael Mulholland picked up his second victory of the season, allowing just an infield hit in five innings of work. Freshmen Ryan Branscum and Chris Hord each pitched two scoreless innings to complete the shutout.

Wells, Oliver and Flora each notched three hits for Eastern while Barnett, Barrows and McMaine each registered two apiece.

Eastern will now hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Bradenton, Fla. for the Florida All-Star Baseball Challenge. The seven-game trip begins Saturday, March 10 with a 7 p.m. game against Army. The Colonels return home on March 21 for a 2 p.m. game against Louisville.
