RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior Tony Wells went 4-for-5 including his first career two home run game and sophomore Matt Davis tallied a career-high five hits as the Eastern Kentucky baseball snapped a four-game losing streak with a 14-3 rout of the Marshall Thundering Herd on Tuesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field. Eastern improves to 15-16 on the season with the victory while Marshall falls to 14-20.
The Colonels exploded for four runs in the first as junior Tyler Barnett doubled with one out and then came home on a RBI double from junior Lucas Waters who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored on the afternoon. Wells, who also knocked in four runs, followed with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence. Davis made it 4-0 a batter later, launching a solo homer just over the right-center field wall.
Marshall got a run back in the second as Blake Sanders singled with two outs, stole second and then came home on Thad Leford run-scoring double.
Wells went deep again in the second, hitting another two-run blast to make the score 7-1. The Colonels tacked on another in the fourth as Waters walked with one out, stole second and third and then came home on a Davis RBI single to center.
Brandon Casamassima led off the Herd sixth with a single to left and Jeff Rowley then drilled a RBI double to right-center, moving to third on the throw home. EKU starter Chris Grider got the next hitter to strike out but Blake Sanders then drilled one up the middle that Davis knocked down, which allowed Eastern to get the force at second but also allowed Rowley to score to make it 8-3.
EKU put the game away though with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Colonels loaded the bases with one out on consecutive singles by Waters, Wells and Davis who went a combined 12-for-14 with nine RBI on the afternoon.
Senior Shawn Flora then worked out a walk to force in the first run and Seymour was hit by a pitch to make it 10-3. Freshman Breck Norment followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Davis and Oliver capped the inning by hammering an RBI double to left.
Grider (4-3) picked up his team-best fourth victory of the season, allowing just three runs in 6.0 innings of work. Sophomore David Owens picked up his first save of the season with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.
