Miami (Ohio) Hands Baseball Third Straight Loss, 6-2

Junior Lucas Waters
RICHMOND, Ky. – Junior Clint Seymour went 2-for-4, his second consecutive multi-hit game, but it wasn't enough as the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks handed the Eastern Kentucky baseball team its third straight loss, 6-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels fall to 13-12-1 with the loss while the Redhawks improve to 17-9 with the victory.

The Redhawks jumped on top with an unearned run in the third. Blake Chaffee led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then advance to third on a Colonel error. Brandon Hillier followed with a two-out RBI single to give Miami a 1-0 lead before EKU starter Alex Napier got out of the jam by retiring Jordan Petraitis on a groundout to shortstop.

Miami extended its lead in the fourth, putting runners on first and second with one out. Chaffee then came up and lined a three-run home run just over the left field fence to give the Redhawks a 4-0 lead.

Miami starter Chris Niro cruised through the first four innings, retiring the first 12 Colonels to face him. But Eastern finally got to him in the fifth. Senior Tony Wells walked to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a Miami error which allowed sophomore Matt Davis to reach.

Seymour followed with the first Eastern hit of the game to drive in Wells and cut the Redhawk lead to 4-1. Junior Joe Oliver walked one out later to load the bases and sophomore Aaron Barrows followed with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the Colonel deficit to two.

EKU nearly cut the deficit to one in the sixth as Wells walked with one out and Seymour then doubled down the right field line with two outs but the Redhawks cut down Wells on a close play at the plate to preserve the two-run lead.

Neither team scored again until the ninth when the Redhawks pushed their lead to 6-2 on a two-run home run off the bat of Petraitis. Bailey Pratt, who came on with a runner on and one out in the eighth, pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his fourth save and secure the Redhawks 10th straight victory.

Sophomore Alex Napier (0-2) took the loss for the Colonels, allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore David Owens pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for Eastern, allowing just one hit.

The Colonels return to conference play on Friday, hosting UT Martin for a doubleheader at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is set for noon.
