CHARLESTON, Ill. - Junior Tyler Barnett hit a two-out go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Eastern Kentucky baseball team to 10-9 victory over Eastern Illinois in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Coaches Stadium. Sophomore Matt Davis led EKU to a 6-3 victory in game two, hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning that gave the Colonels a 5-2 lead. Eastern improves to 22-23-1 overall and 11-9 in the OVC with the victories while the Panthers fall to 19-26 and 8-14.
Senior Shawn Flora and sophomore Aaron Barrows were retired to begin the 10th in game one to bring up Barnett who launched a solo shot over the right field fence to give Eastern a 10-9 lead. Junior McKenzie Willoughby then retired Ryan Campbell on a fly to center with runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
EKU had rallied to tie the score at six in the seventh on a RBI single from junior Joe Oliver only to watch Kory Peppenhorst smash a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to give EIU a 9-6 lead.
But the Colonels responded once again with three runs in the eighth, tying it at nine on a two-run homer from junior Lucas Waters who finished the game 4-for-6 with four driven in.
Willoughby (3-3) picked up the victory with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Oliver also had a big day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Game two went into the sixth with EIU ahead 2-1 but the Colonels loaded the bases with one out to bring up Davis who hit EKU's third grand slam of the season to give the visitors a 5-2 lead.
Sophomore Christian Friedrich picked up the victory, hurling a four-hitter. The sophomore allowed just one earned run, striking out six.
EKU had tied the score at one in the fifth on a RBI single from freshman Zach Monroe only to watch EIU take the lead in the bottom of the inning on a Friedrich wild pitch.
The Colonels go for the sweep Sunday at 2 p.m.
