RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky women’s basketball teams will meet for the first time in 17 years on Sunday. The women’s basketball version of the “Battle of the Bluegrass” will tip-off at 3 p.m., at McBrayer Arena on the EKU campus.
The Lady Colonels will also be taking part in the NCAA’s “Pack The House” challenge on Sunday. EKU is trying to gather the largest crowd for a women’s basketball game in recent history. In addition, former Eastern coach Larry Joe Inman will be honored during the game.
EKU is 2-1 after losing at 12th-ranked Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Western Kentucky takes a 1-1 record into Friday’s home game against George Washington University.
The last time the Lady Colonels and Lady Topper met was Nov. 23, 1991 in Bowling Green. WKU won that game 80-48 and carries a nine-game winning streak against EKU into Sunday’s game. The last time the two teams played in Richmond was Feb. 16, 1991.
The two teams have played 22 times since 1974. In the modern era, Western leads the all-time series 16-6.
Eastern’s last victory over Western Kentucky came on Jan. 29, 1981. The Lady Colonels earned an 83-75 victory in Richmond.
Vanderbilt scored the first 14 points of the game and rolled to an 80-38 win over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday in Nashville. Freshman
Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels with 14 points. All-Southeastern Conference forward Christina Wirth finished with a game-high 16 points for the unbeaten Commodores.
Cherie White scored four points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Jasmine Lewin handed out four assists.
Western Kentucky also played Vanderbilt in its last game. The Lady Toppers lost 90-72 at home. Arnika Brown led WKU with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Vandy’s Wirth scored 24 points and grabbed seven boards against Western.
In their season-opener, Western beat Murray State 95-78 in Bowling Green. Brown scored 27 points and finished with 17 rebounds against the Racers. MSU’s Ashley Hayes scored 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting.
Through Western’s first two games, Brown is averaging 23.5 points and 16.5 rebounds. On Tuesday, Brown was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. The sophomore forward has made 58.6 percent of her shots from the field and 92.9 percent of her attempts from the free throw line.
Senior Dominique Duck is averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game. Hope Brown and Amy McNear are both averaging 10 points per contest. McNear has 17 assists in two games.
Drake has scored in double figures and has led the Lady Colonels in scoring in each of the first three games of her collegiate career. Before scoring 14 against the 12th-ranked Commodores, Drake torched Chicago State for 33 points on Sunday.
Through three games, the Kokomo, Ind., native is averaging 20.3 points, five rebounds and 3.7 steals per game.
Sophomore
Nadia Mossong is scoring 10.7 points and averaging five rebounds per game. White is the team’s top rebounder at 6.7 per game.
