Lady Colonels Face Hot Samford Team In Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Eastern Kentucky will face second place Samford on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. EKU (12-9, 7-7 OVC) is coming off its second 100-point performance of the season, a 104-75 victory over Jacksonville State on Thursday. The win over the Gamecocks snapped a four-game road losing streak. Samford (19-6, 12-3 OVC) is 12-1 in its last 13 games, with the only loss coming against the Lady Colonels in Richmond on Jan. 19.

Tip-off between EKU and Samford is scheduled for 5 p.m. (ET). The game will be aired live on WEKY 1340 AM in the Richmond area and can be heard worldwide at EKUsports.com.

EKU leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs 6-4. The Lady Colonels snapped a four-game losing streak to Samford with their win in January.

In that earlier meeting, Eastern Kentucky limited Samford to 27 percent shooting and 13 total field goals while beating the Bulldogs 72-45. The Lady Colonels shot 52 percent and got a game-high 25 points from senior guard Niki Avery.

The Bulldogs were led by Emily London with 14 points and six rebounds, but the freshman only registered two points in the second half.

Avery made seven of 10 attempts from beyond the three-point arc and 9-of-13 from the field. She also grabbed five boards and dished out three assists. The point guard turned the ball over only once in 38 minutes on the court. Ashley Cazee added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.

EKU made 13-of-19 three pointers for 68.4 percent and out-rebounded Samford 36-27. The Bulldogs made only 4-of-23 attempts (17.4 percent) from deep and just 1-of-11 in the second half.

Against Jacksonville State on Thursday, the Lady Colonels made a season-high 17 three-pointers and shot 53.7 percent from the field. Five Lady Colonels reached double figures led by Avery with 26 points. EKU’s trio of senior guards, Avery, Crystal Jones and Cazee, combined for 64 points.

The Lady Colonels finished the game 17-of-26 from beyond the three-point arc for 65.4 percent. JSU made just four of 20 attempts from deep.

Jones totaled 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Cazee finished with 18 points, eight assists and six boards. Freshman Cherie White totaled 11 points off the bench. LaTonyah Bentley recorded 10 points.

Samford enters Saturday’s game hot on the heels of OVC leader Southeast Missouri State. The Bulldogs are 12-3 in the OVC while the Redhawks are one game ahead at 13-2.

The Lady Colonels snapped the Bulldogs’ six-game winning streak in January and Samford enters this game on another six-game winning streak.

In its last three games, Samford has won one in overtime, one in double overtime and one by two points in regulation.

The Bulldogs overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Morehead State, 59-57, on Thursday. Only six players played for Morehead State, and one of those played less than a minute.

Monica Maxwell scored 18 points to lead Samford. Alex Munday had 14 points off the bench. Savannah Hill finished with 12 points and four assists. London grabbed nine rebounds to go along with nine points.

Morehead State made 11 of 24 three-pointers against Samford but committed two times more turnovers than Samford.

For the season, Samford averages 63.1 points per game, but are holding opponents to 58.3 points per game.

London leads the team with an average of 12 points per game.

In support of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) “Think Pink” initiative the Lady Colonels will wear pink t-shirts during warm-ups for games at Samford on Saturday. The players will also wear pink socks and headbands during the games.

The "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The week set aside for this year's initiative is February 8 - 17. The support of this initiative has grown from 120 teams last year to over 900 teams from a variety for sports for 2008.
