RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team defeated the Bucknell University Bison Sunday, 3-2, in a snow-shortened, 6.5 inning game. Sophomore right-hander Colby Brown started the game for the Colonels and pitched four no-hit innings before giving way to freshman Patrick Cooper, who also held the Bison at bay, giving up just one earned run on two hits in his first appearance as a Colonel. With the win, the Colonels improve to 1-0-1 on the season while the Bison drop to 0-2-1.
“I learned a lot about my ballclub today,” head coach Elvis Dominguez said. “Like yesterday, they got down, but they didn’t quit. They manufactured runs that they needed to win.”
Freshman Jayson Langfels got the Colonels going early in the bottom of the second when he drilled a triple into right center and then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Bucknell, however, would respond in the top of the fifth. Taking advantage of control problems by Cooper, the Bison put two men on through walks before Ed Rubbo drilled a two run single into left, putting Bucknell up 2-1.
In the bottom half of that inning, freshman Eryk Dees led off the inning with a single, then was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Tyler Rehmel. Senior Tyler Barnett then ripped a single to left that scored Dees and knotted up the score.
After Cooper settled down and retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, Bucknell reliever Eric Jarrett looked like he would do the same in the bottom half of the inning, quickly retiring the first two Colonels he faced. However, Jarrett hit senior Clint Seymour with a pitch, and the next batter Langfels laced a ball down the first base line that got past the Bucknell first baseman and scored Seymour for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Cooper got the win for the Colonels while Jarrett suffered the defeat for Bucknell.
Offensively, the Colonels were led by Langfels who went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Barnett who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. For the Bison, Rubbo led the way the RBI single.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, Feb. 25, when they take on the Rockets of Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
