Lady Colonels Set To Begin Three-Game Home Stand

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky will begin a three-game home stand to close out the regular season on Tuesday against Morehead State. The Lady Colonels (13-11, 8-9 OVC) can still finish as high as fifth, or as low as eighth, in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, which will determine the team’s seed for next week’s conference tournament. The Eagles (8-18, 6-11 OVC) are battling for a spot in the eight-team tournament field.

Morehead State handed Eastern a 77-50 loss earlier this season, but the Lady Colonels lead the all-time series 39-34. The Eagles have won four of the last five meetings.

On Saturday, Eastern Kentucky fell to OVC leader Southeast Missouri State, 68-52, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Senior guard Crystal Jones led the Lady Colonels with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Eastern shot 28.1 percent (16-for-57) from the field for the game. Southeast Missouri made 40 percent (24-of-60) of its shots.

Ashley Cazee added 12 points for EKU. With her four assists against the Redhawks, Cazee moved into 10th place on the school’s all-time assists list with 275. The senior now ranks among the top-10 in school history in eight different categories.

In that earlier meeting against Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but the final 37 minutes of the game belonged to MSU. The Eagles scorched the nets to a tune of 50.9 percent and made 63.6 percent from three-point range. EKU shot just 29.7 percent for the game.

Jones led the Lady Colonels with 13 points. Niki Avery contributed 11 points. Chynna Bozeman finished with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles. Tarah Combs added 14 points and five assists.

Half of Morehead State’s field goals came from behind the arc. MSU went 14-of-22 from deep and finished the night 28-of-55 from the field.

Morehead State snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday with a 67-56 win over Tennessee Tech at home. Before dropping seven straight, the Eagles had won four of five, including a win over Eastern Kentucky in Morehead.

On Saturday, Morehead State shot 53.8 percent from the field, and 69.2 percent from three-point range, in the first half to build an 18-point lead at the break.

Tech shot 25 percent for the game and was out-rebounded 47-38.

Brandi Rayburn led the Eagles with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Chynna Bozeman leads the team with an average of 12.8 points per game. Tarah Combs is the team’s second leading scorer at 10.8 points per game. Brittany Pittman averages 8.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

As a team, Morehead State averages 59.2 points per game and allows 62.6 points per contest. The Eagles have been held under 60 points 16 times in 26 games this season. MSU was held under 50 points three times in its seven-game losing streak.
