BRADENTON, Fla. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team got a much needed win Saturday, defeating the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers, 5-2. Junior Dylan McMaine led the way for the Colonels, going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI single, and a run scored. With the win, the Colonels improve to 7-7-1.
The Retrievers tacked on two runs in the first three innings off sophomore starter Colby Brown; however, the Colonels got both runs back in the top of the sixth. Juniors Aaron Barrows and Matt Davis led off the inning with consecutive infield singles. Barrows was driven home on a single to right center by McMaine, and Davis was later brought home on an RBI groundout from junior Tyler Rehmel.
In the top of the eighth, Davis led off with a single through the left side, and advanced to third on a stolen base and a groundout. McMaine got on next through an intentional walk, and then stole second to put two men in scoring position. On an 0-2 count, Rehmel ripped a single up the middle to bring Davis home and give the Colonels a 3-2 lead. An error and an RBI groundout made it 5-2 before the inning finally ended.
Brown went three innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Junior Chris Grider threw in the fourth without allowing a hit or a run. Junior David Owens pitched three hitless innings to pick up his first win of the season. Sophomore Jim Clancy allowed two hits in the eighth but escaped the inning without giving up a run. Senior McKenzie Willoughby retired the side in the ninth to pick up the save.
Aside from McMaine, the Colonels were led offensively by a number of players. Rehmel went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Davis and Barrows both went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, March 19 as in-state rival Western Kentucky visits Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
