RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball Colonels fell to the University of Louisville Cardinals Tuesday, 19-6. On a day with the wind blowing out, Cardinal hitters torched the Colonel pitching staff for 12 extra base hits, including two triples and two home runs. With the defeat, the Colonels fall to 9-9-1 (2-1 OVC), while the Cardinals improve to 12-7 (2-1 Big East).
“I am extremely disappointed in the way we played today against a very good Louisville team,” head coach Elvis Dominguez said. “To not come out and play with any passion against an in-state rival, it should be a wakeup call to our guys. You have to give Louisville credit, though. They played hard the entire game.”
The Colonels used four pitchers on Tuesday, all of them freshman. Patrick Cooper (1-1) got the starting nod and worked two innings, allowing six runs on five hits to get his first loss of the season. Michael Martinez spelled Cooper in the third and pitched two innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Paul Duncan arrived in the fifth to pitch two and two-third innings, giving up nine runs (only four of them earned) on nine hits. Matt Fyffe closed things down for the Colonels, pitching the last two innings without allowing a hit or a run.
Senior Jimmy Belanger got the win for the Cardinals, going six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. Freshman Bob Revesz pitched two innings without allowing a run, and senior B.J. Rosenberg came on in the ninth, allowing one run on two hits.
The Colonels were led offensively by senior Joe Oliver. Oliver went 2-for-3 with two RBI doubles and a run scored. Sophomore Anthony Ottrando also provided some firepower, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Matt Davis found a way to contribute, going 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch and two runs scored.
The Cardinals were led at the plate by sophomore Andrew Clark, who went 3-for-7 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Jeff Arnold went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored, while senior Greg Del George went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Colonels’ game tomorrow against Kentucky State has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. They will return to action this weekend for a three game series at Morehead State.
