BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore right-hander Colby Brown pitched seven innings of three-hit, one run baseball, and the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team defeated the Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne Mastodons Sunday, 8-1. With the victory, the Colonels improve to 5-3-1, while the Mastodons drop to 1-7-1.
The Colonels scored five runs in the top of the eighth to put the Mastodons out of contention. Freshman Jayson Langfels got things going with a one-out single, and was advanced to third on a single by the next better, junior Dylan McMaine. Freshman Ryan Faidley ripped a single to drive in both both Langfels and McMaine. After Faidley stole second, sophomore Anthony Ottrando was hit by a pitch, and senior Clint Seymour walked. The next batter, senior Joe Oliver, singled to clear the bases.
Brown kept the Mastodons at bay all day from the mound, going seven innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits. He also fanned five batters. Hard throwing sophomore Jim Clancy struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth, and freshman Paul Duncan closed things out in the ninth, giving up no runs or hits.
Offensively, the Colonels were led by Oliver, who finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Langfels went 2-for-4 with an RBI and another triple, his fourth of the season. Faidley went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, and senior Tyler Barnett went for 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Colonels play a doubleheader tomorrow, taking on Bucknell first at 10:30 a.m., and then playing Vermont at 3:00 p.m. Senior Michael Mulholland is scheduled to pitch against Bucknell, and junior Chris Grider will go against Vermont.
