MARTIN, Tenn. - Sophomore Anthony Ottrando's two home runs lead the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team to victories in both games of Saturday's doubleheader with UT Martin. Ottrando went 2-for-5 with and a grand slame in the first game, leading the Colonels to a 6-3 victory. He went 2-for-3 with three RBI and another home run in the second game, propelling the Colonels to a 6-0 victory. The Colonels' record now stands at 15-13-1 (7-4 OVC), while the Skyhawks of UT Martin fall to 3-26 (0-9 OVC).
In the first game, the Colonels distanced themselves from the Skyhawks in the second inning when Ottrando blasted a two-out grand slam to right field. With one out in the inning, senior Clint Seymour laced a single to center, and was advanced to second on a fielder's choice by senior Tyler Barnett and an error on the pitcher. After a pop up by freshmen Ryan Faidley, junior Matt Davis singled up the middle to load the bases for Ottrando. Ottrando then drove a ball to right field that cleared the fence and gave the Colonels a 4-0 lead.
The Skyhawks tacked one on in the bottom of the second, but the Colonels added two more in the fifth and sixth for insurance. In the fifth, Ottrando scored on a two out single by freshman Jayson Langfels. In the sixth, Barnett was plated on an RBI single by Davis, giving the Colonels a 6-1 lead.
Junior All-American Christian Friedrich (4-1) earned the win for the Colonels, going six innings and allowing just one run on five hits. He also struck out six batters. Sophomore Chris Hord came on in the seventh inning and pitched the last three innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
Eric Walker (1-6) recieved the loss for UT Martin.
In the second game, Ottrando again put the Colonels on the board, this time in the third inning with a three run home run. Faidley led off the inning with a single, and was advanced to second on a bunt single by Davis. Ottrando then blasted his second home run to right center, giving the Colonels a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Ottrando scored on an RBI single by senior Joe Oliver. And in the seventh, the Colonels added two more off an RBI single from Barnett and a sacrifice fly by Faidley.
Senior Mckenzie Willoughby (1-2) started the game for the Colonels and went five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. Junior David Owens faced and retired one batter in the sixth, and senior Michael Mulholland retired the other two. Sophomore Jim Clancy allowed one hit and a walk in the seventh, but escaped the inning without a run.
Ryan Lantz (0-6) got the loss for the Skyhawks.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow when they face the Skyhawks in the third game of this weekend's doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
