JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s tennis team wrapped up second place in the final OVC standings thanks to a 4-3 win over Jacksonville State Saturday. With the victory, the Colonels (18-6, 9-1 OVC) broke the Gamecocks’ (12-10, 8-2) eight-match winning streak.
The two teams opened play by splitting the six singles matches. Junior Alexandra Sitnikova (No. 3), freshman Myriem Mhirit (No. 4) and senior Jemma Euers (No. 6) each took their matches in straight sets.
EKU proceeded to clinch the team victory by sweeping the three doubles matches. Sitnikova and fellow junior Svetlana Pimenova finished the regular season 8-2 against conference opponents at No. 1 doubles.
“We beat a hot team today which should be a big confidence booster heading into next week’s tournament,” EKU head coach Rob Oertel said.
Eastern Kentucky will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming OVC tournament in Nashville, Tenn.
