MARTIN, Tenn. – Looking for its first season sweep of an OVC foe this season, the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team fell to UT Martin Sunday afternoon, 6-3. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 15-14-1 (7-5 OVC), while the Skyhawks improve to 4-26 (1-9 OVC).
The Skyhawks took a 2-0 lead in the third inning off a Kyle Dudley RBI single and a wild pitch by Colonel starter Patrick Cooper.
UT Martin added another run in the fifth before the Colonels tied it up with three runs in their half of the sixth. With two outs and no base runners in that inning, sophomore Anthony Ottrando singled, and junior Dylan McMaine was hit by a pitch. Junior Tyler Rehmel then doubled to left field, scoring Ottrando. The next batter, freshman Jayson Langfels, ripped a single up the middle that scored McMaine and Rehmel.
The Skyhawks would move ahead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and then add two more for insurance in the bottom of the seventh. The Colonels, meanwhile, would not score again.
Cooper (1-2) received the loss, going six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. He also struck out two batters. Freshman Michael Martinez pitched a third of an inning and allowed two runs on one hit, and junior David Owens closed the game out for the Colonels, getting an inning and two thirds of work and allowing no runs on one hit.
Cale Sutton (2-1) got the win for the Skyhawks.
The Colonels were led offensively by Ottrando, who went for 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Langfels, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Colonels return to action on Tuesday when they host Marshall University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
