RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team fell to the Georgetown College Tigers Wednesday, 12-7. Starter Michael Mulholland allowed five runs in the third inning, dropping the Colonels into a deficit they could never quite erase. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 11-11-1 (4-2 OVC), while the Tigers of Georgetown improve to 23-11 (10-2 MSC).
“We pitched from behind in the count all day,” head coach Elvis Dominguez said. “But to their credit, they swung the bats well, and they answered every time we did.”
The Colonels jumped ahead early when senior Joe Oliver ripped an RBI single though the left side in the bottom of the second, plating freshman Jayson Langfels and giving EKU a 1-0 lead. In the top half of the third, however, the Tigers put five runs across the plate, with the big hit of the inning being a bases-clearing double to left field off the bat of Pete Thackston.
The Colonels would threaten in their half of the sixth. Trailing 10-5, senior Clint Seymour led off the inning with a single, and was advanced to third on a single by Oliver. The next batter, freshman Ryan Faidley, drove a single up the middle, scoring Seymour and bringing Oliver to third. After Faidley stole second, junior Aaron Barrows, who has been swinging hot bat, blasted an opposite field double to left, scoring Oliver and leaving Faidley at third. Trailing 10-7 with no outs and men on second and third, the Colonels looked primed for a comeback; however, the next batter, sophomore Anthony Ottrando, lined out to the center fielder, who then threw out Faidley at the plate as he was trying to tag up and score. Junior Tyler Rehmel then grounded out harmlessly to end the inning and the threat.
Mulholland (3-2) picked up the loss for the Colonles, going three innings and allowing five runs on five hits and three walks. Freshman Matt Fyffe went two and a third innings, and gave up three runs on three hits and a walk. Junior David Owens spelled Fyffe in the sixth and gave up two runs on three hits. Sophomore Chris Hord was the only Colonel pitcher who could solve the Tiger bats, pitching a perfect seventh and a perfect eighth. Senior McKenzie Willoughby came on in the ninth and allowed four runs on two hits.
Nick Marlow (4-2) got the win for the Tigers.
Offensively, the Colonels were led by Barrows, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI, and Oliver, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, April 3, as they take on the Georgetown College Tigers again at Applebee’s Park in Lexington. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
