RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Kentucky State on Wednesday, winning the first game 14-0 and the second game 15-2. With the wins, the Colonels’ record now stands at 20-18-1, while the Thorobreds drop to 2-24 on the season.
In the first game, the Colonels only led 4-0 heading into their half of the fifth before they exploded for 10 runs in that inning to put the game out of reach. The big hit of that inning was a three run blast over the wall in right center from freshman Jayson Langfels. With the home run, Langfels became the only player in EKU history to hit a home run in three straight games.
Junior Eric Hash (1-3) picked up his first win of the season for the Colonels, allowing no runs on two hits in three innings of work. Freshman Jay Embree pitched the final three innings without allowing a hit or a run.
The Colonels were led offensively by Langfels, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI, while sophomore Anthony Ottrando went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI.
The second game of the day saw the Colonels jump out to an early lead, plating eight runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Blake Anderson picked up his first hit and RBI of the season in the inning, driving the ball through the left side of the infield and scoring Langfels.
The Colonels added two more runs in the second and three more in the third, two coming off a double down the left field line by junior Frank Krailler. The double was also Krailler’s first hit of the season.
The Colonels tacked on two more in the fifth before Kentucky State scored a run in the sixth off an RBI single to center by catcher Kris Rush. The Thorobreds, however, would not score again and the game ended with the score 15-2.
Freshman Matt Fyffe (2-0) picked up his second win of the season for the Colonels, pitching three innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits. Freshman Paul Duncan pitched the next three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Sophomore Jim Clancy retired the side in the seventh.
The Colonels were led at the plate by junior Aaron Barrows, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, and Anderson, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Colonels return to action this weekend when they travel to Jacksonville, Alabama to take on the top ranked team in the OVC, the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State.
