DAYTON, Ohio – Looking for its first win of the 2009-10 season, the Eastern Kentucky will travel to face Wright State on Thursday. Tip-off at the Ervin J. Nutter Center in Dayton is scheduled for 7 p.m. Both teams enter the game with 0-1 records.
The Lady Colonels and the Raiders will be facing each other for the second straight year, and 10th time overall. Eastern Kentucky shot 20.8 percent in a 53-47 loss to Wright State on Nov. 25, 2008 at McBrayer Arena. Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels with 16 points. Shey Peddy’s 18 points led the Raiders.
EKU made only 11 of 53 shot attempts and went 5-for-25 from behind the three-point arc. Wright State shot 33.3 percent (17-for-51) from the field, including 1-for-11 from deep.
Colette Cole scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and forced five steals for the Lady Colonels.
Cherie White added seven points and nine rebounds.
Peddy scored 12 of her 18 points at the free throw line. Molly Fox finished with 11 points for the Raiders. Erica Richardson contributed eight points and nine rebounds off the bench.
EKU leads the all-time series 6-3 and is 4-1 against Wright State in Dayton. The Raiders have won three of the last five meetings between the two teams.
Eastern Kentucky committed 28 turnovers in a 75-54 season-opening loss to Western Kentucky on Saturday at E.A. Diddle Arena. Cole led the Lady Colonels with 12 points. Courtney Clifton scored a game-high 22 off the bench for the Lady Toppers.
Eastern shot 35.7 percent from the field for the game, a marked improvement over the 24 percent shooting percentage in an exhibition game last Sunday. EKU went to the free throw line 25 times and made 20 for 80 percent. Western shot 41.1 percent for the game.
Wright State returns four starters from last year’s team that finished 15-16 overall and 10-8 in the Horizon League. LaShawna Thomas returns after leading the team in scoring (12.6 ppg). She also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Ta-myra Davis, a 6-foot-1 forward, also returns after leading the team with an average of 5.5 rebounds per game to go along with 8.5 points per contest.
The only starter not to return is Peddy. She was second on the team in scoring (12.1 ppg) and led the team with an average of four assists per game.
The Raiders are coached by Bridgett Williams. Williams is 98-137 in her ninth season at Wright State, and 108-183 in her 11th season overall.
Wright State opened the season with an 83-67 loss at IPFW. The Raiders gave up 11 three-pointers and allowed IPFW to shoot 48.4 percent from the floor for the game. WSU had three players in double figures led by Thomas’ 22 points. The 5-foot-6 guard also had a team-best eight rebounds and five assists. Richardson added 17 points and Fox scored 12 off the bench.
The Raiders shot well from the field, 46.7 percent, but made just 5-of-18 from behind the arc. Wright State was out-scored by 18 points from three-point land.
