Lady Colonels Lose At Wright State

Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio –
Eastern Kentucky made just 11 field goals and turned the ball over 31 times in a 65-44 loss Thursday night to Wright State. Lexington native Brittany Coles led the Colonels (0-2) with 13 points.

The Lady Colonels shot 26.8 percent from the field, 11.1 percent (1-for-9) from behind the three-point arc, and finished with just two assists. The Raiders (1-1) made 34.4 percent of their shots and connected on 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from deep.

Freshman Alex Jones recorded her first collegiate double-digit rebound performance, finishing with 13 boards and five points. Coles went 3-for-7 from the field but scored seven points in 12 trips to the free throw line.

LaShawna Thomas led WSU with 15 points to go along with six steals and four assists. Maria Bennett came off the bench to hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.

Eastern Kentucky out-rebounded Wright State 46 to 39.

The Lady Colonels trailed by only four at halftime despite turning the ball over 22 times and making only five field goals. Four straight free throws by Talisha Davis gave EKU a 6-3 lead with 16:10 remaining in the opening half. However, Eastern went five minutes without scoring and Wright State connected on three treys. Bennett made two of them, the second giving the Raiders a 14-6 lead with 11:50 on the clock.

Seven unanswered points by Eastern Kentucky kept the score close. Sarah Fraser-Jones knocked down a three, and Coles and Cherie White added a pair of jumpers. White’s shot with less than 10 minutes before intermission made it a one point game, 14-13.

Eastern’s only points in the final four minutes came on three free throws, but Wright State only scored two points in the final three minutes before halftime. A free throw by freshman Ashley Pritchett made it 22-18 at the break.

The Raiders attempted 16 more shots than the Lady Colonels in the first half, due in large part to Eastern’s turnovers.

Wright State scored the first eight points of the second half to stretch its lead to 12. Kanisha Ward knocked down a three and Ta-myra Davis converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 30-18 lead. Eastern Kentucky closed within seven midway through the second half, but would get no closer.

The Lady Colonels will play their first home game of the season on Saturday. Florida Atlantic University will visit McBrayer Arena for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
