RICHMOND, Ky. – After a week off to concentrate on final exams, the Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team will return to action on Friday when the Lady Colonels (5-4) make the short trip to face the University of Cincinnati.
Tip-off at Fifth Third Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Following the game on Friday, senior
Colette Cole will return to Richmond for Saturday’s EKU fall graduation ceremony. Cole will earn a bachelor’s degree in sport management in three and a half years. She will begin work on her graduate degree in January.
The all-time series between Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati is tied at 8-8. The Bearcats (4-5) have won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
In a 69-58 win over Davis & Elkins last Friday, freshman
Alex Jones recorded her third double-double in the last four games and freshman
Brittany Coles added 14 points. The Lady Colonels won for the fifth time in their last six games. Jones finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Coles came off the bench to contribute four rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot to go along with her 14 points, which tied her career-high.
EKU out-rebounded Davis & Elkins by 29. The Lady Colonels totaled a season-best 55 rebounds, including 22 off the offensive glass. Eastern has out-rebounded seven of its nine opponents this season.
Cincinnati is off to a 4-5 start under first-year head coach Jamelle Elliott, a former UConn player and assistant coach. The Bearcats welcomed back six letter winners, including three starters, from last season’s team that finished 14-17 overall and 3-13 in the Big East Conference.
Newcomer Shareese Ulis leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg) and is second on the squad in assists (3.0 apg). Junior guard Carla Jacobs averages 10.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Senior forward Michelle Jones leads the team with an average of 6.9 rebounds per game to go along with 9.7 points per contest.
UC averages just 57.8 points per game, but has held its opponents to 56.4 points per contest. The Bearcats rank 48th in the nation in scoring defense. Cincinnati out-rebounds its opponents by five boards per game.
In their last game, the Bearcats fell at home to Butler, 65-48. Jones recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. No other Bearcat reached double figures. UC shot 32.3 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from behind the arc. Butler connected on 45.3 percent of its shots.
