RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will close out the 2009 calendar year on Tuesday with an afternoon tilt against Central Arkansas at McBrayer Arena. The game will begin at 2 p.m., and all EKU faculty and staff are invited to attend for free.
The game will air live in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
This is the first meeting between the two schools. Central Arkansas (7-2) comes into the game riding a seven-game winning streak. The Lady Colonels (5-5) lost at Cincinnati on Friday.
Freshman
Alex Jones recorded her fourth double-double in the last five games, but Cincinnati opened the second half with a 14-2 run and defeated the Lady Colonels 62-49. EKU trailed by just five at the break before the Bearcats pulled away early in the second half. Jones finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Talisha Davis led Eastern with a game-high 16 points and added six rebounds.
The Lady Colonels held a 34-32 rebounding edge, but committed 22 turnovers. Eastern has out-rebounded its opponent in eight of its 10 games this season.
Central Arkansas is the youngest team in the nation. The Sugar Bears have just three years of total Division I experience on their team.
Since losing at Belmont and Lipscomb to begin the season, Central Arkansas has won seven straight. During the streak, UCA has beaten four non-Division I schools by margins of 60, 53, 43 and 41. Against its three Division I opponents during the streak, Central Arkansas has won by margins of 14, nine and eight.
The Sugar Bears average 81.9 points per game this season and have beaten their opponents by an average of 23.4 points. However, against D-I competition, UCA averages 70.8 points and has a margin of victory of +2.8.
In a 72-64 victory at home against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, the Sugar Bears made 34-of-37 attempts from the free throw line while SEMO committed 24 turnovers. Freshman forward Megan Herbert scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, including 11 off the offensive glass. She converted on 18-of-19 at the free throw line. Freshman guard Micah Rice added 18 points.
For the season, Herbert averages 24.3 points and 13.9 rebounds per game. Three others, Westin Taylor (12.9 ppg), Desiree Rogers (12.0 ppg), and Rice (10.3 ppg), also average double figures.
