Game Notes

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
Eastern Kentucky will hit the road looking to snap a six-game losing skid and an eight-game losing streak on the road. The Lady Colonels (6-14, 3-8) will face Tennessee Tech on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., ET, at the Eblen Center in Cookeville.

The Golden Eagles (4-18, 2-9 OVC) have lost five straight games.

In their last game, against Tennessee State on Saturday, a pair of scoring droughts doomed the Lady Colonels and negated a late 22-7 run in a 67-56 loss at home. EKU cut a 21-point second half deficit to six with a minute left in the game but the Lady Tigers made five of six free throw attempts to secure the victory.

EKU closed within two points midway through the first half before going almost four minutes without scoring and allowing Tennessee State to open up an 11-point lead. The Lady Colonels fought back to within six early in the second half before a scoring drought that lasted nearly six minutes allowed TSU to build a 20-point advantage.

Eastern Kentucky freshman Kayla Drake scored a game-high 24 points, 22 of which came in the second half. She also grabbed six rebounds and made six steals. Junior Colette Cole finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Drake was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. In two games last week, the Kokomo, Ind., native averaged 21.5 points, three steals and two assists.

Tennessee Tech leads the all-time series with Eastern Kentucky by a count of 54-20. The last meeting came on Jan. 10, which EKU won 66-50 in Richmond. Tennessee Tech has won six of the last eight and is 28-4 all-time against Eastern in Cookeville. EKU’s last win in Cookeville came on Jan. 6, 2003.

In the first meeting this season between the two teams, Drake scored a game-high 22 points to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 66-50 win in Richmond. The Lady Colonels used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to turn a one-point deficit into a 10 point lead. Jasmine White scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Vivian Nwosu finished with 14 points.

Drake added six rebounds, five steals and four assists to her totals. Cherie White finished with 14 points and six rebounds for EKU. Cole added 10 points and five boards. Sarah Fraser-Jones contributed nine assists, the most by a Lady Colonel this season.

Tennessee Tech enters Thursday’s game having lost five straight. TTU’s last win came at home against Tennessee-Martin on Jan. 15.

The Golden Eagles have lost two games in overtime during their skid, at Austin Peay and at Tennessee State.

Senior guard Blair Bowens is the only Golden Eagle averaging double figures. She leads the team with an average of 14 points per game. White, a sophomore forward, is the team’s leading rebounder (6.4 rpg) and third leading scorer (8.6 ppg).

As a team, TTU is being out-scored by 8.5 points per game and is averaging 21.8 turnovers per contest.
