JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will face Jacksonville State University on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. The Gamecocks (4-18, 1-11 OVC) are coming off an overtime loss at home to Morehead State. The Lady Colonels (6-15, 3-9 OVC) lost at Tennessee Tech in their last outing.
EKU leads the all-time series against Jacksonville State 12-2. The last meeting between the two teams came on Jan. 8. Eastern won that game 67-62 in Richmond. The Lady Colonels have won five straight and 11 of the last 12 in the series. Eastern is 4-2 in games played in Jacksonville.
In the earlier meeting between the two, Eastern Kentucky used a 10-0 run late in the game to take a 13-point lead but had to hold off a rally by Jacksonville State to secure the win at McBrayer Arena.
Nadia Mossong scored a game-high, and career-high, 25 points for Eastern Kentucky. She also had seven rebounds and five assists. Jolie Efezokhae recorded a double-double for Jacksonville State, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Kayla Drake scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Lady Colonels.
Cherie White finished with nine points, nine boards and four steals. EKU went 27-for-32 (84.4 percent) from the free throw line. The Gamecocks struggled from the charity stripe, finishing 10-for-21 (47.6 percent).
On Thursday, Eastern Kentucky took a 13-point lead midway through the first half, but Tennessee Tech controlled the remainder of the game and won 82-64. The Golden Eagles used a 16-2 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. Drake led the Lady Colonels with 23 points.
Mossong contributed 18 points and a career-best nine rebounds. That marks the seventh time this season that the sophomore has tied or surpassed her career-high for rebounds.
Jacksonville State enters Saturday’s game on a five-game losing skid. However, the Gamecocks nearly ended that streak on Thursday against Morehead State.
JSU built a 20-point second half lead on the Eagles before losing in overtime, 87-77. Jacksonville State scored a season-high 72 points in regulation and then added five more in overtime.
The Gamecocks shot 41 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from behind the arc. Efezokhae led the way with 19 points, joining JSU’s 1,000-point club along the way. Brittany Wiley added 14 points.
Morehead State committed 28 turnovers against Jacksonville State.
Efezokhae leads the team with an average of 13.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Wiley averages 10.3 points and 5.1 boards.
For the season, JSU has made 36.2 percent of its shots, 29.2 percent from behind the arc. The Gamecocks average 20 turnovers per game.
