COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Tennessee Tech on Friday night, 10-4, at Bush Stadium. With the game tied 1-1, the Golden Eagles outscored EKU 9-1 over the next three innings to take a lead they would not relinquish.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 18-11 (6-4 OVC) while Tennessee Tech improves to 14-12 (2-7 OVC).
Sophomore
Matt Fyffe (3-2) received the loss for EKU, going 5.2 innings and allowing eight runs on eight hits. The right-hander also struck out four batters.
Sophomore
Macon Smith came on in the sixth and worked two thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on three hits. Senior
Alex Napier pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief while freshman
Greg Terry retired the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth.
Chad Oberacker (2-1) earned the win for TTU, pitching six solid innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
Freshman
Richie Rodriguez paced EKU offensively, going 2-for-3 on the night with a run scored. Freshman
Dustin Dunlop, meanwhile, batted 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Ben Burgess led TTU at the plate, batting 2-for-5 with three RBI. Alex Henry also had a productive day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
EKU took an early lead in the top of the second when junior
Joey Stevens blasted a double to center and Rodriguez scored from first. The Golden Eagles tied it in the third, however, when Burgess recorded an RBI groundout that plated A.J. Kirby-Jones.
TTU outscored the Colonels 9-1 over the next three innings to take a commanding lead. The Colonels’ lone run during that span came on a solo shot to center by junior
Anthony Ottrando in the sixth inning.
EKU staged a small rally in the top of the ninth, highlighted by a two run shot to left center by Dunlop that scored fellow freshman
Michael Garcia; however, TTU reliever Ryan Dennick retired three of the next four batters he faced to end the threat and the game.
The series will conclude tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
