RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Atlantic 10 foe Dayton, 12-5, in its home finale at Turkey Hughes Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Colonels (26-22, 9-11 OVC) will now travel to Eastern Illinois this weekend to try to play their way into the OVC Tournament.
Sophomore
Macon Smith (3-2) received the loss for EKU, going 1.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits. The Colonels used eight pitchers in all on Tuesday.
Eric Wagner (6-0) started on the hill for Dayton and retained his unblemished record, working 6.1 strong innings and allowing three runs on six hits in the winning effort.
Playing in his last game at Turkey Hughes Field, senior captain
Tyler Rehmel led the Colonels offensively, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Junior
Anthony Ottrando, meanwhile, batted 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
Aaron Dunsmore and Jimmy Roesinger both compiled three hits for the Flyers (36-15, 20-4 A-10), while Scott Dunwoody drove in three runs.
A two-run double by Dunwoody highlighted a three-run top of the second for the Flyers and gave Dayton an early lead.
Junior
Joey Stevens cut the Flyers’ lead to two with a sacrifice fly to right that scored freshman
Jacob Daniel in the home half of the inning.
Dayton added a run in the third and another in the fourth to ahead by four before a solo shot to left by Ottrando in the bottom of the fourth made it 5-2.
After the Flyers added yet another run in the fifth, Ottrando delivered again for the Colonels in the sixth, lacing a single into right center that plated Rehmel and pulled EKU back to within three, 6-3.
Dayton, however, then scored six straight runs to pull away.
A sacrifice fly by sophomore
Jayson Langfels and an RBI double by freshman
Dustin Dunlop in the bottom of the ninth pulled the Colonels to within seven but they would get no closer.
Despite the loss, the Colonels finish the season 13-2 against non-conference competition at home.
EKU will play Eastern Illinois in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday’s single game will also begin at 1:00 p.m.
