RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team was edged by Longwood, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in the Colonels’ regular season finale at EKU Soccer Field. EKU (7-9-2, 4-4 OVC) will now prepare for its first round OVC Tournament matchup with Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 5:00 p.m.

The Colonels held the Lancers without a shot on goal in the first half and had a chance to take the lead, but senior Alex Raich’s shot barely nicked the crossbar and went out of the play.

Longwood capitalized on its first shot on goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half as Dylan Spicker, in the 60th minute, lofted a shot over senior goalkeeper Stephanie Lynch’s head from just outside the box that found the back of the net. It was Spicker’s second goal of the season and it gave the Lancers a lead they would not relinquish.

EKU outshot Longwood on the day, 13-11. Freshman Hillary Cooper led the Colonels with four shots, including two on goal in the second half. Senior Carly Muller and freshman Nicole Donnelly both attempted two shots on the day.

Lynch played 67 minutes, allowed one goal and made one save. Freshman Lyndsay Vance spelled her in the second half and made one save in 23 minutes of action.

Marcia Biddle made four saves to earn the shutout for Longwood.

Junior Stephanie Murray, sophomores Deja Tennon and Hayley Wright and freshmen Tess Akgunduz and Lauren Fant all went the distance for EKU in the loss. Murray finishes the regular season having played every minute of every game.

The Colonels now have one week to focus on their postseason matchup with Eastern Illinois. EKU lost a hard-fought, 1-0, decision to EIU on the road during the regular season. The entire OVC Tournament will take place at Morehead State’s Jayne Stadium and can be viewed for free at ovcsports.tv
