RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky will put its two-game winning streak on the line on Saturday when two of the top-3 scoring teams in the Ohio Valley Conference meet at McBrayer Arena. Tennessee-Martin leads the league with an average of 73 points per game. EKU is third with an average of 69 points per contest.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
Both of these teams are scoring much more than they did a year ago. Last season UT Martin averaged 53 points per game and EKU averaged 55 points per game. Tennessee-Martin also leads the OVC with an average of 7.5 three-pointers per game. Eastern is second with an average of 7.0 treys per game. The Lady Colonels lead the conference in three-point shooting percentage defense (24.8 percent).
Eastern Kentucky improved to 3-3 on the season and opened OVC play with a win by beating Murray State at home on Thursday. Eastern made 14 three-pointers and used a late 15-3 run to defeat the Racers, 83-73.
The Skyhawks (3-3, 0-1 OVC) opened conference play with a 103-82 loss at Morehead State on Thursday.
Reese Bass led EKU against Murray State by knocking down a career-best five three-pointers and finishing with a career-high 23 points. Senior
Cherie White made a career-high four treys and finished with a career-best 20 points. Sophomore
Alex Jones has played Murray State three times in her career and has three double-doubles after finishing with 11 points and 18 rebounds.
Murray State entered the game averaging 49 rebounds per game. The Racers had only 13 at halftime and were out-rebounded 51-29 for the game. EKU shot 41 percent (25-for-61) from the field including 14-for-31 from behind the arc for 45 percent.
Eastern Kentucky has scored 80 or more points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2007-08. The Lady Colonels haven’t scored 80-plus in three straight games since the 2004-05 OVC championship season.
Tennessee-Martin is sporting practically a brand new team this season. The Skyhawks have three returning players from last season and 14 newcomers. Nine UTM players are true freshmen. UT Martin’s top four scorers and top three rebounders this season are freshmen.
Heather Butler, a 5-foot-6 guard, leads the team with an average of 21.2 points per game. Jasmine Newsome, a 5-foot-7 guard, averages 17.0 points per game. Jaclissa Haislip, a 6-foot guard, contributes 11.7 points and a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game. Beth Hawn, a 6-foot-2 forward, is the team’s fourth leading scorer at 6.8 points per game. Those four freshmen account for 57 of UTM’s average of 73 points per game.
In a 91-87 victory over Air Force on Nov. 23, Butler and Newsome scored 28 points each. Butler hit four three-pointers and Newsome scored 11 points at the free throw line. Haislip knocked down three three-pointers and finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. In Thursday’s 103-82 loss at Morehead State, Butler finished with 31 points and Newsome had 18.
The Skyhawks entered the week ranked 18th in the nation in three-pointers per game. Tennessee-Martin is shooting 39 percent from the field and averaging 43 rebounds per game.
