RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore
Alex Jones scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Eastern Kentucky’s 75-66 victory over West Virginia State on Tuesday night at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Colonels (4-4) shot 52 percent from the field.
In recording her 10th career double-double, and her third of the season, Jones made 10-of-11 attempts from the field and went 11-for-15 at the free throw line. Her 31 points were a season-high, and missed matching her career-best of 34 by only three.
Nadia Mossong finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for EKU.
Reese Bass scored 12 points and handed out five assists.
Dusti Chapman led West Virginia State (2-7) with 17 points.
A three-pointer by Chapman with 10:10 remaining in the first half gave West Virginia State its largest lead of four points, 25-21. However, the Lady Colonels tightened up their defense and scored 10 unanswered. The Yellow Jackets went more than five minutes without scoring. Jones scored nine of the 10 points. Her free throws with 4:08 showing on the clock capped the run and put EKU in front by six, 31-25.
Eastern Kentucky led by as many as eight and took a 7-point advantage into the locker room at halftime. Jones had 19 points and seven rebounds at the break.
West Virginia State scored the first six points of the second half to close within one and tied the game 47-47 with 11:46 left to play. Eastern Kentucky answered by scoring eight of the next 10 to stretch its lead back to six. The Yellow Jackets would close within a single point one more time before the Lady Colonels scored nine straight to start a 12-2 run that put the game out of reach. Two free throws by Jones with 4:29 remaining capped the run and put the home squad in front by 11, 67-56.
EKU out-rebounded West Virginia State by four, but allowed the Yellow Jackets to pick up 13 boards off the offensive glass. Nineteen Lady Colonel turnovers allowed WVSU to stay in the game. The visitors out-scored Eastern 24-11 off turnovers.
The Lady Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they make their second road trip of the season. EKU will face Central Arkansas at 3 p.m. ET in Conway, Ark.

Sophomore Alex Jones recorded her 10th career double-double. She is now in sole possession of eighth place on EKU’s all-time double-doubles list (records since 1982-83). Jones needs five more double-doubles to move into the top-5.
Eastern Kentucky improved to 9-0 under head coach Chrissy Roberts when scoring 70 or more points. The Lady Colonels are 4-0 this season when scoring 70-plus.
Alex Jones and Reese Bass combined to make their first 11 shots from the field. Jones started off 8-for-8 while Bass connected on her first three attempts.
With 7:57 left in the first half, EKU had more points in the paint (10) against West Virginia State than it did in the entire game against UT Martin (4) on Saturday. Eastern finished with 34 points in the paint.
West Virginia State entered the game averaging 23.9 turnovers per game but the Yellow Jackets finished with only 16 turnovers.
West Virginia State entered the game having out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 7.1 rebounds per game this season. EKU out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 38-34 on Tuesday night.
This was the first-ever meeting between Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia State.
