Eastern Kentucky sits in fourth place in the Ohio Valley Conference, but three teams are within a game of the Lady Colonels. EKU is two games behind third place Austin Peay.
Eastern missed a prime opportunity to gain some separation in the standings with a 49-46 overtime loss to Jacksonville State on Saturday. The Lady Colonels held JSU scoreless for 11 minutes in the first half and led by 11 with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. The Gamecocks ended regulation on a 12-1 run and scored the first five points in overtime.
Freshman
Shakeyia Colyer finished with career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (9). Freshman
Alex Jones grabbed 14 rebounds and scored nine points.
EKU threatened the school record for blocked shots in a game. The Lady Colonels blocked 10 shots on Saturday, one short of the record of 11 set on March 9, 1992 against Middle Tennessee State. Brittany Coles led the way with four blocks.
Eastern has held 13 of its last 18 opponents to 60 points or less. The Lady Colonels have held 18 of its 23 opponents this season to 65 points or less. EKU is second in the OVC and 75th in the nation in scoring defense (59.3 ppg).
In the first meeting of the season between the two teams, Eastern Kentucky shot 25.9 percent in the second half and scored only 16 points. The Lady Colonels had two shots in the final six seconds to tie the game but couldn’t convert on either one. Colyer led EKU with 10 points. Jones had nine rebounds and three assists. Monica Miller led the Redhawks with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Eastern Kentucky committed 23 turnovers. After shooting 41.7 percent in the first half, EKU made just 7-of-27 attempts (25.9 percent) in the second half.
This is the 39th meeting between Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri. EKU leads the all-time series 25-13, but SEMO has won nine straight. Eastern hasn’t beaten Southeast since edging the Redhawks in the finals of the 2005 OVC tournament in double overtime.
Southeast Missouri enters Thursday’s game having lost three straight and five of six since beating EKU in Richmond on Jan. 16.
The Redhawks have been playing without their three top scorers. Freshman Jasmine Davis (10.0 ppg) has missed the past eight games and is out for the season. Freshman Bailie Roberts (8.4 ppg) has missed the last five games and junior Lauren Sharpe (7.2 ppg) has missed the last eight games.
Davis and Sharpe didn’t play the first time the two teams met. Roberts hasn’t played since scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds against EKU on Jan. 16.
Sophomore Bianca Beck and Katie Norman, with averages of 6.3 points per game, are the active leading scorers for SEMO. Senior Lesley Adams is the team’s leading rebounder at 6.2 boards per game.
