First Half Scoring Drought Dooms Lady Colonels

ATLANTA, Ga. –
Eastern Kentucky went more than 10 minutes in the first half without scoring on its way to a 64-52 loss to Campbell on Saturday at the Starwood Hotels of Atlanta Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Georgia State.

A pair of free throws by Brittany Coles with 12:04 remaining in the first half gave the Lady Colonels (1-4) a 12-9 lead.  However, Eastern wouldn’t score again until the 1:46 mark.  By then the Lady Camels (5-1) rolled off 16 unanswered and led 25-12 before Jade Barber finally snapped the EKU drought.

Before Barber’s basket, the Lady Colonels were 4-for-23 from the field (17.4 percent).  Eastern ended the first half with three straight makes to raise its first half shooting percentage to 26.9 percent.

Campbell shot 46.4 percent in the first half and out-scored EKU 14-2 off turnovers.

The Lady Camels scored the first two baskets of the second half to take their largest lead of 16 points, 34-18.  Eastern closed to within five, 38-33, with 10:51 left in the game, but never got any closer.

Sophomore Marie Carpenter led EKU with 22 points, including scoring 10 straight for the Lady Colonels in the second half.  Katelyn Bass led Campbell with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Eastern Kentucky shot 32 percent from the field for the game, including 2-for-19 from three-point range (10.5 percent).  The Lady Camels made 41 percent of their shots and out-rebounded Eastern by 10.

The Lady Colonels will return home to face an unbeaten Kentucky Christian University team on Tuesday at McBrayer Arena.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
