EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will go back on the road for two games this weekend at the University of Evansville Winter Classic at the brand new 10,000-seat Ford Center in Evansville. The Lady Colonels (2-4) open play against the host Purple Aces (1-5) on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The other first round match-up features Chicago State and Marshall. The winners of the first two games will play each other on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET. The consolation game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
EKU and Evansville have only met twice and have not played since Jan. 5, 1985. The Lady Colonels have won both games in the series, winning once at home and once in Evansville.
In their last game, the Lady Colonels used a 22-5 first half run, including 15 straight unanswered points, to beat Kentucky Christian 97-61 on Tuesday night at McBrayer Arena.
Jade Barber led EKU with a career-best 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal while only playing 20 minutes. It was her second double-double in the last three games.
Brittany Coles finished with 15 points. Three others scored in double figures.
Evansville opened the season with four straight losses, falling to Murray State, Cincinnati, Bowling Green and Brown. The Purple Aces picked up their only win of the season against Troy (59-49), but lost their most recent game at home to Ball State (55-50).
UE has not scored more than 59 points in a game since its season-opening loss at Murray State (76-61). The Purple Aces have been held to 50 or fewer points in half of their games.
Samantha Heck, a 6-foot-2 junior center, leads the team in scoring at 11 points per contest. Briyana Blair, a 5-foot-11 senior guard, averages 8.8 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game.
As a team, Evansville averages 50.8 points per game. The Purple Aces have made 33 percent of their shots from the field, 27 percent from three-point range and 67 percent from the free throw line. UE opponents have knocked down 41 percent from the field. Evansville is turning the ball over 21 times per game.
Marshall enters the Winter Classic with a 3-2 record. Chicago State comes to Evansville with an 0-7 mark.
