HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will travel to Huntington on Tuesday to play its rubber match with Marshall at 3:00 p.m. at the Kennedy Center.
The teams split their two previous meetings this season, with Marshall winning the first, 8-5, at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and EKU winning the second, 9-6, at Turkey Hughes Field.
EKU (14-22) has been surging of late, as the Colonels have swept Morehead State over the weekend and have won seven of their last nine games. Junior
Jacob Daniel hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth of game one against the Eagles, freshman
Bryan Soloman crushed a pair of three-run home runs in the game two rout and senior right-hander
Stephen Hefler pitched 8.2 innings of shutout baseball in game three en route to being named the OVC Pitcher of the Week.
Junior
Richie Rodriguez continues to lead the Colonels at the plate, batting .401 on the season with 30 runs scored and 14 stolen bases. Junior #A.J. Jamison#’s recent emergence at first base has also been key to EKU’s recent success. The Boonsboro, Md. native is hitting .395 with 10 RBI in limited playing time.
Freshman right-hander
Blake Bottoms (0-0, 10.80 ERA) will make his first career start on the mound for EKU on Tuesday.
Marshall (14-20) dropped two of three to Houston over the weekend, but has won four of its last six games. The Thundering Herd is led offensively by Rhett Stafford, who is hitting .305 on the year with four home runs and 21 RBI.
EKU leads the all-time series with Marshall, 34-27. Daniel drove in four runs and Rodriguez scored three runs in the Colonels April 5 win over the Thundering Herd.
Following this week’s non-conference game, EKU returns to OVC action this weekend when the Colonels host UT Martin in a three-game series at Turkey Hughes Field.
