RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will begin a four-game home stand on Wednesday when the Colonels welcome in-state rival Western Kentucky to Turkey Hughes Field for a midweek showdown beginning at 4:00 p.m. EST.
EKU (15-29) snapped a seven-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon by defeating Tennessee Tech, 7-3. Senior right-hander
Stephen Hefler held the Golden Eagles scoreless through the first 6.1 innings of that game while freshman
Bryan Soloman, who was named the OVC Player of the Week on Monday, batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Juniors
Richie Rodriguez (.376 batting average) and
Jacob Daniel (.368 batting average) continue to lead an EKU squad that is now hitting .283 as a team on the season.
Junior left-hander
Greg Terry (2-0, 5.68 ERA) will make his first start of the season on Wednesday against the Hilltoppers.
WKU (27-17) had lost four straight before defeating Louisiana-Monroe in the final two games of last weekend’s series. The Hilltoppers are led by their all-time hits and RBI leader, senior Matt Rice, who comes into this week batting .368 with a team-best eight home runs and 48 RBI.
Sophomore right-hander Taylor Haydel (5-3, 7.09 ERA) will take the hill for WKU on Wednesday.
WKU leads the all-time series between the two schools, 72-59-2; however, EKU has won three of the last four matchups, and the last time the Hilltoppers visited Turkey Hughes Field on March 17, 2009, the Colonels won on a dramatic walk-off home run by Jayson Langfels in the bottom of the ninth. Junior right-hander
Matt Harris, who has allowed only one earned run in 18 innings of work against OVC competition this season, earned his first career win in that game.
Following this week’s game with WKU, EKU will host conference foe Murray State in a three-game series at Turkey Hughes Field this weekend. Senior Day will be held before Saturday’s first pitch at 1:00 p.m. EST.
