MOREHEAD, Ky. – A pair of women’s basketball rivals will meet for the 81st time on Saturday when Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State clash at Johnson Arena in Morehead.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com. A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCSports.TV.
The series between the two rivals is tied 40-40. Morehead State has won nine of the last 10 meetings and holds a 22-14 edge all-time in Morehead. Four current Lady Colonels have played against the Eagles.
Alex Jones has averaged 17.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in four games.
Marie Carpenter is averaging 15.5 points in two games.
At 8-7 overall and 4-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play, EKU has already surpassed its total number of wins (6) and total conference victories (3) from last season.
In its last game, Eastern Kentucky escaped with a 62-61 win after a shot by Murray State as the horn sounded bounced off the rim. Carpenter led EKU with 15 points.
Jasmine Stovall contributed a career-best 14 to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jones had 12 rebounds to move into a tie for ninth place on EKU’s career rebound list.
Morehead State is 6-10, but the Eagles have started OVC play 3-1.
MSU beat Southeast Missouri, Austin Peay and Jacksonville State and has lost to Tennessee Tech. On Monday, Morehead State beat Jacksonville State 68-52 on the road. Linda Dixon scored 20 points while Ashar Harris finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. JSU turned the ball over 27 times, including 14 times off MSU steals.
Morehead State will be the second straight opponent for EKU that launches a lot of three-pointers. The Eagles average 28 three-point attempts per game and went 7-for-31 from deep at Jacksonville State. MSU is hitting 7.7 treys per game, which ranks 11th in the country. Before allowing Murray State to shoot 37 percent from three-point range the Lady Colonels had limited their previous six opponents to a combined 17.2 percent (17-for-99) shooting from three-point range.
The trio of Dixon, Harris and Courtney Lumpkin leads MSU. Dixon averages 14.1 points per game. Lumpkin contributes 12.4 points per game. Harris averages a double-double, 12.1 points and 12.1 rebounds per game (fourth in the nation).
Early in the conference season, EKU and Morehead State are among the top four teams in the standings. Two squads are unbeaten (Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Illinois). The Lady Colonels and Eagles are the only two teams with one conference loss.
