Lady Colonels Step Out Of OVC Play To Host Longwood

Eastern Kentucky University’s women’s basketball team will step out of Ohio Valley Conference action to host Longwood University on Wednesday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.  The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.  A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCSports.TV.

In its last game, Eastern Kentucky (9-9, 5-3 OVC) lost 84-61 to visiting Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.  The Skyhawks shot 51 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range in the win.  Jade Barber scored a career-best 24 points on 10-for-12 shooting and a grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for the Lady Colonels.  It was her fifth double-double of the season.

Eastern leads the all-time series with Longwood 2-0.  EKU won the last meeting between the two teams, 56-46 on Dec. 30, 2004.

Longwood enters Wednesday’s game with a 5-18 record.  The Lancers are 3-3 in their last six games.

LU is led by 6-foot-1 forward Brittanni Billups.  The senior leads the team in scoring (10.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg).  Crystal Smith, a junior guard, is the second leading scorer at 10.3 points per game.

As a team, Longwood has struggled most of the season to score.  The Lancers average 54.2 points per game while shooting 34 percent from the field 23 percent from three-point range.  Their opponents are averaging 69.8 points per contest while shooting 40 percent from the floor and 30 percent from deep.

On Monday, Longwood had little trouble scoring in an 86-77 loss at Murray State.  All five starters scored 10 or more points.  Smith led the team with 18 points and 11 assists.  Mieke Elkington had 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Billups scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Longwood shot 48 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.  The Lancers out-rebounded MSU by one, but were out-scored 20-9 off turnovers.
