RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will host preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Tennessee Tech on Saturday at McBrayer Arena.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com. A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCSports.TV.
The Lady Colonels stand at 10-9 overall and 5-3 in OVC play. Eastern Kentucky needs two more wins to double its total number of victories from last season and one more conference win to double its number of league victories from a year ago.
Tennessee Tech enters Saturday’s game 8-13 overall and 4-3 in OVC games.
In its last game, Eastern scored on its first five possessions and made seven of its first 10 shots to jump out to a 14-0 lead in an 80-62 non-conference victory over Longwood on Wednesday. Longwood missed its first 10 shots from the field. The Lancers didn’t get on the board until a free throw at the 14:45 mark and didn’t connect on their first field goal until 13 minutes remained in the first half.
Jade Barber led EKU with 19 points and 17 rebounds, her second straight double-double and sixth of the season.
Marie Carpenter scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.
Saturday’s game will be the 80th meeting between Eastern and Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles lead the series 58-21 and have won four of the last five games between the two. Tech is 21-14 all-time in Richmond. Four current Lady Colonels have faced TTU. In four games against the Golden Eagles,
Alex Jones is averaging 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Tennessee Tech was the preseason favorite to win the OVC title for a second year in a row. The Golden Eagles lost their first two OVC games of the season, at UT Martin and at SIU Edwardsville. But since then TTU has won four of five league contests. All four wins have come at home.
Senior guard Tacarra Hayes does it all for Tennessee Tech. She leads the team in scoring (17.2 ppg), assists (76) and steals (30). She’s second on the squad in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and blocks (10).
Sophomore guard Jala Harris became eligible at the end of the fall semester after transferring from Alabama-Birmingham. She has scored in double figures in all but one game and is averaging 14 points per contest. Brittany Darling, a 6-foot-5 center, is the team’s top rebounder (6.5 rpg) and third leading scorer (9.2 ppg).
As a team, TTU is scoring 62.7 points per game and allowing 66.4 points. The Golden Eagles have shot 39 percent from the floor and 24 percent from three-point range in addition to being out-rebounded by three boards per game.
On Monday, Tech beat Jacksonville State 65-59. Hayes had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. The Golden Eagles shot 47 percent from the field and 38 percent from deep, but were out-rebounded by 22.
