Game Notes

RICHMOND, Ky. –
On Thursday night, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team will do its part to help raise awareness of the fight against breast cancer during its game against Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

The Lady Colonels will wear pink shooting shirts and shoelaces for “Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center Night” at McBrayer Arena.  In addition to wearing their pink shooting shirts during warm-ups before the game, the Lady Colonels will wear the pink shirts throughout the day around campus and in class in an effort to raise awareness in the campus community.

Fans are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink to the game as well.  Pink ribbons will be available for fans at the front door.

Tip-off in is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.  The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.  A live video broadcast of the contest is available on OVCSports.TV.

The Lady Colonels (12-13) are in a battle for the No. 4 seed in next week’s Ohio Valley Conference tournament, and the first round bye that comes with it.  Three teams are still alive for the fourth seed.  EKU and Murray State are both 7-7 in the OVC.  Morehead State is one game behind at 6-8.  Eastern can clinch the No. 4 seed with a win over SIU Edwardsville and losses by Murray State (at Tennessee State) and Morehead State (vs. Eastern Illinois).

Thursday’s game is just the fifth meeting between the two teams.  SIUE leads the series 3-1.  Each team has won on their own home court.  The Lady Colonels have never scored more than 60 points against the Cougars.

The first time these two teams met this season, Eastern couldn’t overcome a poor first half in a 64-53 loss in Edwardsville on Feb. 4.  EKU scored only 20 points in the first half while shooting 23 percent from the field, 22 percent from three-point range and getting out-rebounded by seven.

Marie Carpenter led Eastern with 17 points.  Jade Barber added 13 points and 19 rebounds.  Jazmin Hill led SIUE with 15 points.

OVC newcomer SIU Edwardsville is 16-9 overall and in third place in the OVC with a 10-4 league mark.  The Cougars however are not eligible for postseason play this season.

SIUE features a balanced scoring attack and two of the top rebounders in the conference.  The team’s top-4 scorers are separated by 1.5 points per game.  Raven Berry, a 6-foot-1 forward/center, is the leading scorer (11.1 ppg) and top rebounder (9.8 rpg).  Hill, a sophomore guard, is the second leading scorer (10.9 ppg).  Junior Michaela Herrod averages 9.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.  Freshman Katie Hempen contributes 9.6 points per game.  Berry and Herrod are ranked second and fourth respectively in the OVC in rebounding.

As a team, SIU Edwardsville averages 65 points and allows 62 points per game.  The Cougars shoot 40 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range and commit 3.5 fewer turnovers per game than their opponents.

On Saturday, SIUE knocked off OVC co-leader Eastern Illinois 59-54.  Berry led the way with 15 points and 22 rebounds.  Hill made four three-pointers and finished with 18 points.
