Box Score I Play-by-Play
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Host Indiana defeated the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team, 11-5, on Wednesday afternoon in the Hoosiers' home opener at Sembower Field.
With the sweep of this week’s home-and-home series, IU improves to 8-13 on the season. The loss drops EKU to 7-13.
EKU trotted out five pitchers on the afternoon, four of whom were freshmen and one of whom was a sophomore. The young hurlers struggled with control all afternoon, recording six walks, four hit batsmen and four wild pitches.
Freshman right-hander
Cody Creamer (0-1) started on the bump for the Colonels and received the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing five runs on five hits.
Left-hander Collin McEnery (1-0) started for the Hoosiers and earned the win, working four scoreless innings while allowing just three two hits and striking out three batters.
EKU scored all five of its runs in the final two innings. Sophomore
Alex Arovits plated three with a pinch-hit, two-out, three-run home run to left field in the top of the eighth that scored seniors
Jacob Daniel and #A.J. Jamison#. It was Arovits’ first hit of the season and the first home run of his career.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, senior
Richie Rodriguez blasted his team-leading eighth home run to left center, a two-run shot that scored freshman
Demetrius Moorer.
Jamison followed up that home run with a stand-up double to right center, but it was too little too late as Daniel then grounded out to end the game.
Daniel, however, paced EKU at the plate, going 3-for-5 on the day with a double and a run scored. Daniel finished this week’s series with IU 5-for-9 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Dustin DeMuth finished a home run shy of the cycle for IU, going 4-for-4 three RBI and three runs scored.
EKU opens Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when the Colonels host Jacksonville State in a three-game series at Turkey Hughes Field.
