RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped the decisive series finale to Ohio Valley Conference leader Austin Peay, 18-2, on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
With the loss, EKU drops to 17-19 (9-6 OVC), while the win widens APSU’s lead atop the OVC standings, improving the Govs’ record to 24-15 (11-3 OVC) on the season.
EKU used eight pitchers in the lopsided defeat. Sophomore right-hander
Brent Cobb (2-1), who had been very effective out of the bullpen this season, picked up the loss in his first career start, getting knocked around for six runs on eight hits in three innings of work.
Right-hander Casey Delgado (5-3), on the other hand, tossed a complete game gem for APSU, surrendering two runs (only one of them earned) on eight hits while striking out seven Colonels.
APSU led 11-0 before EKU scored its first run of the game on an RBI base hit by senior
Dustin Dunlop in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Colonels, however, would not score again until the bottom of the ninth when freshman
Demetrius Moorer drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring junior
Justin Trent.
Senior
Richie Rodriguez led EKU at the plate in the losing effort, collecting two hits to up his team-leading season hits total to 49.
Jordan Hankins, Greg Bachman and Matt Wollenzin all drove in three runs for APSU in the rout.
EKU returns to action with two midweek games, a home contest with Ohio on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and an away contest at Marshall on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
