EKU Baseball to Host Ohio, Travel to Marshall in Midweek Contests

Live Stats

RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will play its first non-conference games in nearly a month this week as the Colonels host Ohio on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and then travel to Marshall on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

Coincidentally, EKU’s last non-conference game this season was against Marshall on March 27. The Colonels won that game, 10-3, behind a season-high nine doubles. Since then, EKU has gone 9-6 in conference play and is currently tied for third-place with Morehead State in the league standings.

EKU dropped two-of-three games to first-place Austin Peay in a pivotal Ohio Valley Conference series at Turkey Hughes Field this weekend. In game two, EKU overcame a five-run deficit and rallied for three runs in the bottom of ninth inning to win it, 7-6, on a walk-off single by senior #A.J. Jamison#.

Senior Richie Rodriguez continues to lead EKU with a .358 batting average and 11 home runs. The Colonels, as a team, no longer lead the country in home runs, but they do lead the country in home runs per game (1.33), because both of their midweek games at Appalachian State were washed out by rain last week.

Jamison led EKU with a .364 batting average in the series with APSU, upping his batting average on the season to .324. Junior Austin Grisham, meanwhile, enters this week hitting .320, while senior Jacob Daniel, who drove in three runs in EKU’s narrow game one loss to the Govs, now leads the team with 34 RBI.

Ohio (22-17) arrives in Richmond having won four straight, including a three-game sweep of conference foe Buffalo at home last weekend. Jake Madsen leads the Bobcats with a .364 batting average, while Jensen Painter has recorded a team-high 11 home runs and 34 RBI.

Marshall (14-25), on the other hand, has lost six of its last seven and recently dropped two-of-three games at conference opponent Houston. The Thundering Herd is paced offensively by Isaac Ballou (.312 batting average, 18 stolen bases) and Nathan Gomez (.310 batting average, 12 doubles, 31 RBI).

EKU will send freshman right-hander Cody Creamer (0-1, 9.00 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday, and Marshall will counter with right-hander Shane Dedig (1-1, 3.00 ERA).

The pitchers for Wednesday’s game at Marshall have not been determined.

EKU is 6-1 all-time against Ohio, including a 5-4 win in Athens last year, and the Colonels are 31-20 all-time against Marshall.

Following this week’s games, EKU will travel up I-64 this weekend to face in-state and conference rival Morehead State in a three-game series that pits the two third-place teams in the OVC against each other.
