RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team begins Ohio Valley Conference action this Sunday by hosting in-state rival Morehead State. First touch is at 1:00 p.m. at EKU Soccer Field.

EKU wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule on a high note, blanking Transylvania, 1-0, last Friday thanks to seven saves by freshman goalkeeper Erika Wolfer and a game-winning score by freshman Dani Cant. The Colonels enter league play with a record of 4-4-1, their best-ever record at the midway point in the season.

EKU’s offense has been led by junior Nikki Donnelly, who has three goals and an assist to her credit this fall.  The forward from Cincinnati has already tied the career goals record at EKU with 11, and her 24 shots this season is on pace to break her own program single season shots record of 40, set back in 2010.

The Colonels, however, will have to face OVC foes without their second-leading goal scorer, sophomore Kaylynn Brown, who has been sidelined with an injury. Players such as Cant, sophomore Devon Saini and freshman Amani Thomas are expected to step up and fill Brown’s shoes in the attack going forward.

The Colonel defense has been anchored by Wolfer, who has been extremely effective in goal during her first season at EKU, and a durable, proven backline consisting of senior Deja Tennon, junior Lauren Fant and sophomores #Emily D’Italia and Paige Larkin#.

Morehead State has struggled in the early part of the season, arriving in Richmond winless (0-7-1) and ranking last in the conference in shots (57) and goals allowed (18). However, the Eagles have won two of the last three OVC regular season titles and they have never lost in Richmond. In fact, Morehead State leads the all-time series between the two programs, 5-1-2. The Colonels’ lone win against the Eagles was a 1-0 victory last year in Morehead.
