RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore
Amandine Faouzi won all four of her singles matches in straight sets this weekend to capture the Flight A title at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational. The Colonels swept the four singles flights as well as the top doubles bracket in a dominating overall team performance.
Eight teams competed in the tournament, including five other OVC squads – Austin Peay, Murray State, SIUE, Southeast Missouri and UT Martin. EKU went 22-2 in singles and 7-2 in doubles competition.
“It was good to make a statement early in the season against so many of the conference teams and I think this shows we are ready to defend our OVC title,” Eastern Kentucky head coach
Rob Oertel said.
Faouzi cruised through her matches and capped the weekend with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Austin Peay’s Alison Carre in the championship match. Fellow sophomores
Melissa Gerritsen (Flight B) and
Marcela Jimenez (Flight D) won their respective brackets. Junior
Milena Poffo and sophomore
Carmen Rodriguez advanced to the finals of the Flight C bracket, but did not play against each other.
In doubles, Gerritsen teamed up with junior
Saioa Oscoz to win the Flight A doubles bracket. The duo won the championship match in a tie-breaker over a team from Austin Peay.
Eastern Kentucky concludes its fall schedule at the ITA Regional Championships beginning on Oct. 18 in Lafayette, Ind.
