NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A scoring drought midway through the second half doomed the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team on Monday night as the Lady Colonels fell at Ohio Valley Conference East leader Belmont, 65-49, at the Curb Event Center.

The loss dropped EKU to 10-7 (4-2 OVC) while the win strengthened Belmont’s (12-8, 7-1 OVC) grip on the OVC East lead.

Eastern never trailed and led by as many as six points in the first half. Senior Raechele Gray poured in 11 points in the first 20 minutes of action as the Lady Colonels took a 29-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A three-pointer by freshman Miranda Maples less than three minutes out of halftime expanded EKU’s lead to five, 38-33. However, the Lady Colonels scored just four points over the next 13 minutes as Belmont used a 23-4 run to slowly pull away.

Senior Alex Jones recorded her second straight double-double in the loss, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The performance puts her all alone in second place on EKU’s career double-doubles list (30). Fellow senior Jade Barber also had a big game, scoring 14 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

EKU shot 32 percent (20-of-63) from the field in the loss, its second lowest mark of the season.

Alyssa Visbeen paced the Bruins with 16 points, while Jordan Coleman contributed with a double-double of her own (11 points, 14 rebounds).

EKU’s chance at redemption is immediate, as the Lady Colonels will host Belmont at McBrayer Arena on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
